Editorial standards
Fair does not mean vague, and neutral does not mean splitting the difference between unsupported claims.
Accuracy before speed
We verify names, dates, numbers, vote totals, legal claims and event timing before publication. If the evidence cannot support a claim, we narrow it, attribute it or leave it out.
Labels mean something
News Brief reports a verified development. Analysis explains implications from established facts. Explainer describes how a process works. We reserve Breaking for consequential news the desk is actively updating.
The actual split
We name the real camps in a dispute rather than forcing every disagreement into left versus right. We present the strongest sourced argument each camp is making without manufacturing equivalence.
Humor has guardrails
Wry asides may target bureaucracy, political process, campaign machinery or this desk's own judgment in reading another appendix. We do not joke about victims, illness, deaths, war casualties, protected groups or the substance of tragedy.
AI use
Automated tools may assist with research organization, transcription, formatting or drafting. A human-directed editorial process is responsible for source selection, verification, framing and publication. We do not present synthetic images as documentary evidence.
