Sourcing policy
Every consequential claim should lead a reader toward the evidence, not away from it.
Our source hierarchy
- Primary records: laws, rulings, filings, vote tallies, official data, transcripts and on-record statements.
- Independent reporting: multiple reputable news organizations when the lead warrants confirmation.
- Expert context: named specialists whose expertise and interest are clear.
- Political reaction: used to document what a person or camp says—not to prove the underlying claim.
Source ledgers
Standalone stories carry a Source Ledger naming the record behind the report. Newsletter editions list every publisher and primary document used.
Limits
When source material is unavailable, paywalled or incomplete, we say so. Multiple republications of the same wire story do not count as independent confirmation. Posts on social platforms are evidence only of what the named account posted.
